Background
The OpenTrails specification was launched in Northeast Ohio through Code for America. It was later introduced to the Portland, Oregon region at the 2014 National Day of Civic Hacking. Several commercial partners have since helped to introduce to the standard to other locations. The standard covers five data types:
- Trail Segments (GeoJSON)
- Trailheads (GeoJSON)
- Named Trails (CSV)
- Stewards ( CSV)
- Areas (optional) – parks and preserves
Analysis
While only introduced in spring 2014, the combination of active participation by several commercial firms, a few government agencies and nonprofit organizations suggests that this standard has a strong future.
